Did anybody else ever play Magic The Gathering?

Juzam DjinnMany years ago I was an avid collector and player of Magic The Gathering (MTG). I had some extremely rare cards that not only played well, but were coveted by anybody that saw them. But if I haven’t played in years, why am I blogging about it? Well, about 7 years ago I gave my collection to one of my stepsons, who has since moved out and left his cards with me. He’s recently come into some financial trouble, so I’ve been selling what I could from the cards to help him out.

Black LotusNot only can I not believe the prices some cards are going for (some over $1,500 each), but I found that I really missed playing MTG. As I looked over the hundreds of cards, I found myself having fond recollections of how I used them in decks and the various tournaments that they won for me. There’s no gaming store near me to play at anymore and I am now approaching 40. So I don’t think that I will be getting back into MTG anytime soon. Besides, I have other extremely expensive hobbies to drain my wallet nowadays. But I can’t help but miss collectible card games. I recently purchased some World of Warcraft cards for my other stepson and myself. I think I’ll crack open the instructions and see if we can’t get a game on today.

So, how much did I make selling off cards today? Less than $150. It seems that my son had let a few friends “look” at his cards a few years back and my 4 Black Lotus cards, worth $750 each, seem to have vanished. There were other cards that I recall owning that are selling for $300-500 now. If the collection was as it once was, I could have made over $5,000 for my son.

Oh well, now back to eBay to sell some old PDAs and SmartPhones. I doubt I’ll get even get the sell price of a Black Lotus for both of them.
